JC Penny’s ACTIVELY supports female fans. I will actively support JC Penny

Thanks to the wonderful Leslie J I have now seen this brilliant, pro/positive female fan ad.

Per KCTV 5 in Kansas City, It is part of a campaign to reach the growing Latino/Latina market and did so in a pro-female fan way. I love that so much.

I’m not the demographic that JC Penny are targeting but by treating female fandom as individuals supporting because they love the game not  just as the accessory/sexualize way normally presented, they won me over too

They get it and therefore will get my money in support.  Thanks JC Pennys

McDonald’s Asks “Got FIFA World Cup Fever?” Proves Soccer has Arrived in America..

This is part of the front page of a McDonald’s website devoted to their peel and win  promotion around the World Cup.  Yes, they are a worldwide sponsor of the World Cup and are the, “official restaurant.”

This is not new globally but is a massive change from even just four years ago. They are spending 6 weeks of their promotional calendar year focused on tying their sales to the World Cup in America. The American campaign is not targeted toward solely Spanish speaking customers as has often happened and still does, (looking at you JiffyLube).

They are tying sale so their most famous items: Big Mac, Egg McMuffin (not with sausage), McNuggets, and Fries to win game pieces offering prizes from food items to US Soccer scarves to a trip to the Final.  Additionally they are bringing out specially designed packaging for it.  [is that Sir Alex?]

Nothing sends a clearer message that soccer is here than the Golden Arches seal of money making approval.    The contest starts June 10 and runs through July 21.  Their website can be found at mcdonegoal.com

THE BIGGEST, MOST SUCCESSFUL (pipe down Milan) AND RICHEST CLUB IN THE WORLD JUST MADE THEIR SECOND COLOR THIS YEAR, HOT PINK..  HOT PINK… LIKE NOT EVEN TRYING TO HIDE IT, BOLD AS HELL, HOT PINK..

Real Madrid and Adidas (I know; I am shocked too) are celebrating La Decima by painting Europe fuchsia … and it is FABULOUS.

I’m not even a Madrid fan but I am pretty certain that I will own one by the start of next season.  Also the traditional white kits are also trimmed in the same pink and look fantastic.

Predictably, as bold as the pink is, the open sexism and homophobia that already runs rampant in soccer, especially related to European based teams, has been even more embolden.

More disheartening was how simply generic and cliched the trolling was.  There was nothing original, creative, or unique about the insults, just the usual drudgery.  The tired and true, “girlie,” and, “gay,” slurs as though being either and/or both of those things are insults that should make the receiver feel shamed and inadequate.  Breaking News: I don’t feel either of those things.
I am proud to be female… and a female sports fan.   What I am ashamed of, is these fellow,” fans,” who supposedly share my love of this game but do so in such a vile, inhumane way, using it as a weapon to promote hate and divide people.

FEMALE AND/OR GAY =/= WEAK, PATHETIC, DEGRADING, SECOND RATE, CONTEMPTIBLE, HUMILIATED, OR WHATEVER OTHER NEGATIVE STEREOTYPE THESE LOSERS WANT TO HURL.  

I get wanting to best your rival team’s fans.  That is part of sports and part of the fun of sports.  What I do not get is going attacking and abusing anyone.   I stood next to a group of Mexican fans in Columbus last September.  We joked, ribbed, argued decisions, but we did it with mutual respect and a good-natured humor between us.   We hugged it out at the end and they wished us/US well in Brazil and I wished them luck in the play-offs.  We were/are rivals, NOT ENEMIES.
The tagline for the Madrid Campaign is, “LOVE IT OR FEAR IT.”  And I love that..  you can see the fear in these responses: Fear of being Female, fear of being Gay, but mainly fear of not being accepted by society.”  It hits the nail on the head..

There are theories that the pink is designed specifically to make to the female market.  As I have said several times before, if teams want to grow their market-share, they must target female fans as we are the last new revenue stream.  (ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION SUNIL?)  The Biggest team in the World gets that it needs female fans, even if just to promote females as equal, to continue to grow their profits and their fanbase.

They won me over and I am not even a fan.

Thanks Real Madrid for treating females as equal sports fans and worthy of equal marketing and merchandising.

Apparently, US Soccer has released a female fan appeal option at Forever 21.. I have seen it, tried it on and let me just say I will supply the matches for the metaphorical scorching of the US Soccer House covered Earth.

Also met Hubris and let’s just say, we cannot be friends. I got what I asked for, well not even a little bit. I asked for female fan apparel options that did not SEXUALIZE female fans.

Instead US Soccer doubled-down on misogyny and sexism in fan support and worst of all they aimed it at young girls.

They ONLY female fan option is a t-shirt style top, with arms and sides cut out down to the bottom which is midriff bearing. It exposes a female’s entire chest and back, breasts on display for days. You can see from the picture, it is basically just a bib.  Guys still get fully made shirt options (and they also get options, as in plural, MORE THAN ONE and none are sexualized)

So girls and women either wear this with a bra (sports one, more safely) and it being exposed or wear something under it like a tank. Yeah, it’s a bib. Because it is a heavy t-shirt fabric, it couldn’t even really be used as a bathing suit cover-up.

What is most disturbing is that this sexist, male fantasy non-sense is being marketed (badly admittedly) to younger girls.   They are being told if you want to be a fan of US Soccer, the team of Mia, Julie, Brandi, Kristine, Abby, HAO, Carli, Alex, Syd, Hope, and Tobin, etc, etc in addition to the boys, that you can only do it in an overly sexualized state.  

Yes these clothes and this marketing is about the World Cup which starts in days but they will not magically disappear like Cinderella’s slippers.. It will still be there in Oct when the women start their own World Cup Qualifying campaign.

There are some women and girls may very well like this, especially for a gym workout wear. It is not really wearing outside the gym appropriate. The fact that it is the ONLY option for female fans is insulting.

Yes, I know that there female jerseys this cycle and possibly some t-shirts from Nike but every single, one that I have ever tied has clearly been a mismarked XL youth or smaller male. They are not cut for female bodies.

Why is US Soccer continuing to teach girls that their only fandom options are as accessories to the men in their lives or sexualized fantasies for general male fans or as mom.

WHEN THE HELL ARE WE FEMALE FANS GOING TO BE TREATED AS INDEPENDENT FANS, WORTHY BRING TREATED AS FANS, JUST FANS?

How hard it is to come up with a non-sexualized, properly designed clothing items to sell to 40+% percent of your market? Seriously, YOU ARE DISMISSING AND DISRESPECTING OVER 40% of your customers.

SUNIL, sweetie, you are an economist… how does that usually go in business?

The MUCH heralded US Soccer line at Hurley includes board shorts matching both the god-awful golf shirts and the bomb pop; 4 different t-shirts, 2 tank tops, and a hat.. EVERY ONE FOR GUYS… EVEN THE DAMN HAT IS JUST FOR GUYS? There is, as per infuriating usual, zero options for female fans unless they want to buy from the Guy’s section. WE DON’T.. WE’D LIKE CLOTHES THAT SHOW OUR SUPPORT WITHOUT BEING SLUTTY OR GUY’S.

The RAGE JUST BUILDS… How the hell hard is it for ANYONE at Soccer House to figure out there may be a female fan or two? OR AT LEAST ALMOST HAVE YOUR FAN-BASE..
