Fifty Shades of Soccer… Sex and the Game..

My summer post-World Cup recess is coming to an end and time to get back to work of bringing you the important stories from the female perspective.

One of the things I did on my break was power reading the entire Fifty Shades of Grey series (it took a weekend but it is done).  I deserve a medal for that… [Editorial Rant: Can someone PLEASE get E.L. James a flipping thesaurus.  Girl knows like 15 adjectives and used them insistently and incorrectly A LOT…]

Now why do you care about this? Well because one of the things that kept me hanging on, pardon the bondage pun, is that the only stable male influence in the lead female Ana’s life, is her step-father Ray.   Now Ray is salt of the earth, old school guy…  I should mention the story is set in Seattle in 2011 for the most part.  Part of Ray’s characterization being salt of the earth is his love of sports… Only two are covered the Mariners and the Sounders…  Ray is all kinds of obsessed with soccer, European club and his beloved Sounders.

Sadly for Seattle, comic gold for the rest of us, EL James is not a fan…   Seriously, they lose to Real Salt Lake TWICE in the trilogy which spans about 5 months.  They never win.

MLS, however, does win… The series has sold 100 million+ books globally and been translated into 51 languages.  Nothing MLS marketing has done has had the kind of global reach.  Yes I am including the Beckham thing… they paid a lot of money for that mess, he got the vast majority of the money and the new recognition and not sure it reached the same audience: predominately women and soccer moms at that.

The trailer for the film was released less than two weeks ago and it is already the most viewed of 2014 by a WIDE margin.

MLS needs to jump this bandwagon hard…  Many, many, many women hate this story.. god knows it is a horribly written series but it is also a massive way to get new women into the game.

I always described the game as an introduction to my non-inclined girlfriends the same way, “the prettiest boys on the planet, of every flavor you could possibly desire, run for 90 minutes and then all get shirtless and hug at the end.. what is not to love.”

No, by no means do I think that is all there is to the game or that it is a biggest reason to watch.. It is simply the selling point to get ladies to tune-in.  The beauty of the game will seduce them.  Honestly, I have never seen it fail…

Sex and soccer is not exactly a revolutionary concept I grant you, but MLS has never been given this sort of free marketing opportunity.

One of my favorite bringing ladies to MLS programs was DC United’s “Ladies’ Nights,” which have tickets to a game, cocktails, mani/pedis, shopping and player meet-and-greets.  It was a brilliant way to ease women into the game in a way that does not assume women are inferior.  The most important part of it was that it treated female fans as individual fans, not just taxi moms who drive the kids or accessories on the arm of their partners who are actual fans.

DC United said, “we support our female fans… we want more female fans…we support you being girlie and hardcore too” that needs to happen more.  Tying it to a 100 Million+ book series that has already laid the groundwork is the simplest way to do it.

Also we should ALL support Seattle losing as much as possible..  yes? [before the drama.. I am not suggesting a MLS bondage night thing… simply focusing on a highly under-represented segment of the fanbase]

Also producing appear actually designed for women but…I digress on that point.

Nate Silvers Tackles North America Sports League Popularity.. Gets Interesting Results

In a follow-up its follow-up to, “The Distribution of Fandom in Pro Leagues,” that ranked the popularity of teams within the top four American leagues and the English Prem, the stat-loving, data geeks at FiveThirtyEight attempt to determine the top sports leagues in America.

The presumed wisdom of Sports in North America is the Big Four Sport [NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL] rule all and everything else in minor league.

For reference, you will remember:

“Jason Collins [playing for the NBA’S New Jersey Nets] becomes the first openly gay [male] athlete to play in a major sport in America,”

followed quickly by,

“Dudes, what about Robbie Rogers?  He did it way before Jason Collins”

“I said MAJOR sport, MLS and soccer are not major in America,”

“WTF? Of course it is”

“No, it’s not, you delusional hipsters”

drama of a couple of weeks ago..
This sort of thing causes drama, so stats wunderkind and sports loving madman Nate Silver actually looked into the issue under the tag, “a Popularity Contest,” in the Datalab section of his fivethirtyeight.com website. “The ‘Big Five’ in North American Pro Sports,”   analyzes google’s search traffic to determine what is generating the most search interest and there by assuming it is the most popular.

MLS has a better argument [the the WNBA]. Its most popular teams, the LA Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders, generate more search traffic than the Blue Jackets [the Big Four’s least popular team]. The Galaxy and Sounders also earn about as much search traffic as the least popular NBA team, the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ultimately, Silvers dismisses both MLS and Canadian Football League , remember NORTH AMERICAN, in favor of the Mexican Liga MX.

In fact, Mexico’s top professional soccer league, Liga MX, is comparable to the NHL in terms of global popularity. Liga MX’s most popular team on Google, C.D. Guadalajara, produces about as much search traffic as the Canadiens, the Seattle Seahawks, the San Francisco Giants and the Chicago Bulls.

Silver creates comprehensive list of each team in the top seven leagues in North America [NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Liga MX, MLS and CFL] of which the bottom 11 teams are all MLS, and 13 of the bottom 16 are.   MLS is clearly growing but by Silver rather objective approach, it is not yet hit the next level as a group..  Some teams have crossed over but not enough

Major League Baseball Gets It… WHY DOES MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER CONTINUE TO REFUSE..

Major League Baseball Gets It... WHY DOES MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER CONTINUE TO REFUSE..

This is a quote from the LA Times, from an article on MLB’s deal with maga nail polish maker OPI to produce baseball related colors for female fans.

They also today announced a deal with Victoria’s Secret PINK to produce and sell a line of MLB clothes for female fans that are very cute and relatively affordable (Though someone needs to be getting the Wash Nats items for sale.. A.S.A.P)

This little fact is OUTRAGEOUS.  FOUR out of  NINETEEN clubs will have jerseys for female fans… 21% OF TEAMS…  TWENTY-ONE FLIPPING PERCENT OF TEAMS…

DEAR REMAINING 79% TEAMS,

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU AND YOUR SEXIST BEHAVIOR?

THE FACT THAT MLS DOES NOT, OR WORST, MLS MUST INSTANTLY MANDATE EQUAL TREATMENT FOR FEMALE FANS IS ABHORRENT AND PATHETIC.

Equal access to support one’s team should not be an option for team…   If the team decided not to sell shirts to African-American or homosexual fans, the World Would Be OUTRAGED and UP IN ARMS, and rightly so… discriminating against women, however, is simply accepted.

HOW IT HAS NOT BEEN ORDERED FROM ADIDAS AND THE LEAGUE OFFICE THAT ALL TEAMS MAKE A FEMALE JERSEY FOR SALE IS INSANE, SHORT-SIGHTED, SEXIST AND SIMPLY STUPID.

FIX MLS DISCRIMINATION NOW!

MLS Season Opener… STILL CONFLICTED and STILL UNHAPPY..

One of the Reasons I LOVE MLS and DC UNITED..  FIX THE REF LOCK-OUT

I ended-up renewing my Galaxy season tickets, because spending the summer without my people is honestly unimaginable.  I love them all too much to not be with them this season.  It does not easy my conflict with supporting LA Galaxy or MLS, especially with the referee situation.

It should be noted that LA Galaxy staff spent over an hour one evening discussing my concerns for the club’s supporters groups and the front office’s reaction to them.  It was a interesting and informative discussion, but still waiting for the proposed changes offered.  No idea if they will make the changes or if it is was BS to get me re-up since many are not.    Only time will tell…

Actually I am considering getting a partial season ticket package to non-Chivas USA.  I can get like 7.5 matches for $60 or something ridiculous like that.  Now that there is some interest in developing the team, it might be fun to be a part of it.. unless it does become LA Gunners then hell no.

The LA Galaxy season opener starts in about 4 hours and I have no desire to go.. My grandparents each worked 40+ years as union members in a factory’s line.  It was a hard work but it allowed them to have 11 children between them and a happy retirement with good pension and the ability to live life at a level they earned.  My grandfather died several years but my grandmother’s pension is still supporting her.  I adore them more than anyone in the world and the idea of breaking the lockout line is breaking my heart.

It feel like a boldly disrespectful slap in the face to them and all that union membership has give to them and by extension my whole family.  We are simply a UNION FAMILY regardless of the fact that the vast majority of the grandkids including me are well educated and white-collar without union membership.

If the refs were on strike, it would be no question of me not going. I would be an automatic, “HELL NO,”  and right now it is leaning that way.  However, the ProRef organization has provided the scab refs while simultaneously having their members locked out.  THIS CONFUSES ME.

I am not certain of the proper response to a lock-out in this situation is. I have asked family members and social media as well researching the Union response to the NFL ref lock-out.  I learned NFL players are members of the AFL-CIO, but cannot find out about the refs. If the refs organization is still providing the referees does that mean that I my attendance would not be the equivalent of breaking a picket line?  I need an ask-a-union-member hotline and STAT.

I honestly do not know what to do.. but I know what MLS needs to do.. GET THEIR FLIPPING ASSES TGETHER AND GET THE DEAL DONE WITH THE REFS..
