I’ve read a ton of opinions on why USSF would give Jürgen the massive contract extension now, as opposed to after the WC cycle. They have all been interesting but surface level.
It seems to me, that US Soccer could not have been more clear in their message had they dropped it on Times Square at Midnight on NYE. The message reads
WE ARE SO SCREWED WITH THE WC DRAW. WE ARE BEYOND HOPING TO GET OUT OF THE GROUP.. WE ARE JUST PRAYING TO GET OUT OF THE TOURNAMENT WITH A POINT.
It is obvious the thinking is that giving Klinnsman the contract now heads off post-fiasco WC results backlash demanding his head on a platter. They waited long enough for him; they aren’t going to let a disastrous draw get in the way.
Establishing him as the coach and technical director for WC2018 is a bold and blatant admission that USSF has already written off next summer in Brazil.
